The lecture describes the main traditions of scientific integrity and research ethics that have been developed over the past 80 years, beginning with the Helsinki Agreement and the development of modern ethical principles. The main part of the lecture focuses on the growth of addiction science in Europe and America, and the challenges of conducting basic, clinical and policy research on alcohol and other psychoactive substances. Particular attention is given to different degrees of research misconduct and how to prevent them by means of ethical decision-making and institutional guidelines. Conflict of interest and the influence of powerful industries such as tobacco, alcohol, gambling and pharmaceuticals are also discussed.
